This new edition draws on the rich Parisian musical heritage at the beginning of the 20th century and revitalises André Messager's "Solo de Concours". Composed in 1899 by the famous composer, conductor and organist André Messager, the work was originally intended as an examination piece for the clarinet class at the Paris Conservatoire. Despite its original purpose as an examination piece, the composition captures the charming and expressive essence of the French tonal language of the time.
The present edition, based on the first edition of 1899 authorised by Messager himself, corrects historical engraving errors and ambiguities, thus offering performers an insight into the composer's authentic intentions. As a special bonus, this edition also contains the "Allegro scherzando", a charming piece for sight-reading which was also commissioned by Messager for the competition.

If the massive brass of military bands evoke the idea of a troop of warriors covered in shimmering armor, the clarinets' voice heard at the same time seems to represent their loved ones exalted by the clash of arms. This fiercely passionate character belongs above all to the B-flat clarinet, which is the virtuoso instrument par excellence.

Prosper Mimart, article on the clarinet in “Encyclopadie de Musique et Dictionnaire du Conservatoire”, 1925.
