Searching for music: Nicolai Pfeffer's clarinet

Next November 5, the prestigious clarinetist Nicolai Pfeffer will be here in Italy. The musician I and the Orchestra della Toscana led by Maestro Markus Stenz will replicate their long-established collaboration, trying their hand at a program that travels through time and space, from Mozart to Busoni, passing through Strauss. While waiting for this event, which will be set against the backdrop of the Teatro Verdi in Florence, we met him and interviewed him for you.

Nicolai Pfeffer is actually now at home with ORT and Maestro Stenz, having already debuted with them with the 2020 album “Elective Affinities”, for the record label NovAntiqua, where once again to mark his journey is the inevitable K 622, the Mozart Concerto for clarinet and orchestra: it was precisely this concert that fascinated him so much as a child that it pushed him to get closer to the clarinet and today it is one of the strong pieces of his repertoire.
Nicolai Pfeffer embodies at the same time the modern and ancient image of the complete musician: a clarinetist who is not content to be a skilled performer, but invests energy in detailed and profound musicological research that goes beyond satisfying the need for performing practice. Whether he has the instrument in his hand, or an ancient score, his mission is to make the clarinet world exciting, and he does so by fighting on different fronts, combining editorial experience with that of concert and teaching.
