The concert fantasy on themes from the Verdi opera “Rigoletto” is probably the best-known composition by the Italian clarinetist Luigi Bassi (1833-1871). It has been rightly rooted in the standard clarinetists' repertoire for many years and is also extremely popular with the public. Bassi, who was himself the principal clarinetist at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, combines the lyrical qualities of the instrument with fascinating virtuosity in his operatic fantasies, which do more than justice to Verdi's music.
Although Bassi's compositional production focuses on the genre of operatic fantasy, pedagogical works, clarinet duets and a clarinet concerto in the first Italian prints and in the Bassi manuscript have also survived. Our edition is based on the first printing of the 1865 composition and also includes a further, hitherto unknown, adaptation of Rigoletto from the pen of Luigi Bassi: The introduction to the quartet “Beautiful Daughter of Love”, written a few years earlier, brings - just like its sister work - an opera atmosphere in the concert hall with its sophisticated thematic treatment and the skilful ornamentation of the clarinet.
You can obtain an arrangement of this work by Nicolai Pfeffer for clarinet and large orchestra in score and parts on loan from Breitkopf & Härtel, Wiesbaden.
